Book Chapter: Highlight and Laser tactics
Busy! Busy! Busy! I am so busy every day. After I have completed a task, a new task is coming in. I spend so much effort to complete all the tasks and forgot to prioritize and schedule my task. It is undeniable that my daily task is endless. I am always rushing to complete my task and I feel so tired. I am trying to seek a solution to create my own free time. Luckily, I read this book. The book title is Make Time. Make time is not about increasing productivity and complete more tasks, it is about to create time for the task which is matters to me. Here I am going to share with you how to make time.
In the beginning, set your highlight for your day. In the previous article, I have explained how to select the highlighted task. A highlight task is a task that brings joy and satisfaction to you. If you cannot decide your highlight, find a quiet place, and take a piece of paper. Write down all the tasks you wish to do. For example, you wish to go hiking with your friends, cook dinner for your family or read books. Write down all the tasks. Next, prioritize the task and execute the task which is matters and important to you. After you have made a decision, schedule in your calendar to prevent procrastination. Our minds cannot always remember everything. Task scheduling is to let your phone or calendar help you remember the task. Set a reminder for yourself to ensure that that day you are going to execute the task. If someone is going to ask you to do something on that day, reject them in a polite manner. A planned day provides the freedom to focus on the moment. You can focus on the process and execute it smartly.
The next step is to set your brain in laser mode when you are executing your plan. A laser is a beam of lights that focus on a small area of the surface. It is obvious that the small area is bright. It is similar to our life. If you focus on the task, you will get an outstanding result and it enlightens your life. However, I believe that you will encounter obstacles to execute it. What is that? Smartphone and tablet. Nowadays the smartphone has become an indispensable tool in our life. We can’t resist the temptation to swipe the smartphone because the virtual world is so fun and full of entertainment. Initially, we plan to watch youtube or play a game for 10 minutes and at the end become 2 hours. It sounds familiar, right? We indulge in smartphones and neglect more important tasks.
How to avoid distractions? We must create barriers to distraction. The first step is to keep the smartphone or tablet away from you when you are doing the task. You can avoid the disturbance of notifications. There are too many social applications such as Instagram, Facebook,TikTok, and the list goes on. We spend so much time check-in and see other people highlights. Now is the time for you to spend time on your highlight. If you put a smartphone far away from you, you can reduce the urge of using the smartphone because it is inconvenient to get it at that moment. Therefore, you can stay focus on your task. If you still want to use a smartphone, set your wallpaper screen to motivate and remind yourself to focus on the important task.
After you finish your task, quit and reward yourself. It is not necessarily a big reward, it can be small actions that can create a high level of happiness for yourself. For example, watch a comedy movie, have nice food or coffee, or hang out with your best friends. We are human. We have limited energy levels each day. Every task requires commitment and energy. Quit after you have accomplished your task and recharge yourself to prevent burnout. Take a small break and recharge yourself so you can always ready to face new challenges in the future. Look back on your productive day and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Lastly, reflect on yourself at the end of the day. Identify the parts you are not doing well and write down the area of improvements. Adjust your planning next time to suit your needs and your satisfaction. Life is like a marathon. It is a long journey to discover the life that belongs to you.
