Book Title : The Willpower Instinct
Book Chapter: I Will,I Won't,I Want:What Willpower is and Why it Matters
Willpower is a power that use to overcome all the
difficulties and obstacles in life. This is a special power because it can give
you the power to achieve your dream lifestyle. Based on the book, willpower
consists of three parts. There are I want power, I will power and I won’t
power.
Firstly, you can try to identify your I want power. What is
the important long-term goal that you want to focus and put your energy on?
Time is fair. We only have 24 hours in one day. It is depending on what are the
things that are important to you and you are willing to spend more time on it.
After you set the goal, ask yourself again what is the outcome after you
succeed in the challenge? For example, the outcome may be financial security,
greater health, or a good relationship. Therefore, try to best to achieve it.
Always bear in mind that what you want to achieve by setting a specific and
measurable goal.
I will power is the power help you to act so you can have good progress towards achieving your goal. Action speaks louder than words. If you spend your time write all the goals on a piece of paper, it is always a dream if you don’t have any action plans. you need to spend a lot of time and energy to achieve it in a smart way. In the beginning, it seems impossible. However, if you break the impossible word into three words What are the words? There are I m possible! Don’t do less to expect something great. It seems impossible because you are stunned by the difficulties and don’t know where to start. The first way you can do is find a simple step to start. Break down a big action into small actions. Try to make it become a habit. For example, your goal is to want to complete a 10km marathon. You can start to train yourself by running 1 km three times in one week. After you have done it for several weeks, you can start to increase the running distance to 2km,5km, and even more. Follow your own pace and one day you can complete a marathon!
Moreover, you can also reward yourself after you have good
progress. Tracking is important because you can know your status and how much
you have to improve. The reward can be like just watch a movie, play a game, or
having a great dinner with a loved one. The reward method is applicable if the
reward does not conflict with your goal. For example, if your goal is to reduce
weight, you cannot set a reward by eating chocolate after you have completed
the exercise. When you are doing a small action for the goal, focus on your
feeling. What is your feeling when you are committed to the goal? Try to
cultivate a mindset that is you do it because you want to do it!
I won’t power is the power that resists the temptation.
What is a bad habit that can prevent you to achieve your goal? In this world,
there are a lot of distractions. How to overcome it? The first is to develop
self-awareness. Every day all of us need to make a lot of decisions. Every
decision you made every day will influence your outcome. You can keep finding
excuses and procrastinate to carry out a difficult action. Keep track of your
decision. Try to analyze your decision at the end of the day whether the
decision you made is to support your goal or not. Reduce all the unnecessary
decisions will be made you clear what you want and become less distracted.
Lastly, willpower is like a muscle. It becomes stronger
when you train more. Normally, you feel tired and low energy after you have
completed a task. In the beginning, try to set a simple task for yourself and
do it. Increase the difficulties of task deliberately. Your willpower strength
will become stronger if you are able to complete a more difficult task!
